Media Center Episode 30

Podcast Ep. 30 Vid. 1

This being the final episode, let’s have some fun with today’s media clips. This first one is a collection, each featuring the word ЛАДНО. We’ve encountered it elsewhere in the Media Center, but for now just listen and see if you can get a feel for it.

ЛАДНО translates as “okay, fine” but there’s a reluctance to it, or a resignation. For ex: My friend says, “I got two free tickets to the movies tonight. Will you come with me?” I’d answer: “Хорошо!” It’s a positive, enthusiastic agreement. But if my sister calls and asks me to go with her to a six hour conference on Ancient Peruvian Basket Weaving, I’d shrug and say.”Ладно, I’ll go.” It’s a reluctant agreement.

We learn ЛАДНО officially in Russian Accelerator, but I want to give you a sneak peek here in RME. So watch all those again, and each time someone says, “Ладно” imagine it as this reluctant, “Fiiiiine!” Oh, and see if you can spot all ten times they say it…

Podcast Ep. 30 Vid. 2

This one is also a string of clips, each featuring the expression, “Ух ты!” As with Ладно, we’ve encountered it before but just watch, and think of how you’d translate it to English.

So, you’ll usually see Ух ты! interpreted as, “Wow!” or “Wow, look at that!” It’s a way of expressing surprise and admiration. Again, re-watch those clips and imagine saying, “Look at that!”
Ух ты! (Dad bought us clothes!)
Ух ты! (I didn’t know you could paint!)
Ух ты! (Look at that cute doll you choose!)
Ух ты! (Look at that rare toy collection!)
Ух ты! (Look at these cool clothes we can try on!)
Ух ты! (Look at that! Your karate is awesome!)
